I'm not sure about the legal aspect of gay marriages here but people seem to be pretty open minded. I've just moved to Maui from San Francisco and it has been an interesting adjustment. People are more cautious and secretive, it seems, regarding their sexuality. It seems to me people here have a "live and let live" mentality but there's not really a gay scene like there is in SF.
I feel totally safe here being a solo queer woman. For the most part, people are very welcoming and accepting. Hope that helps ya....
